Overall, while the overall proportion of both men and women with driving licenses increased steadily, the percentage of younger drivers declined from 1996 to 2006.

In the first chart, the percentage of males holding driving licenses rose gradually from around 70% in 1976, reaching a peak of approximately 80% in 2006. Female license holders, on the other hand, began at a significantly lower level (around 30% in 1976), but experienced rapid growth over the following three decades, doubling to 60% by 2006, substantially narrowing the gender gap.
