近期有很多家長谘詢暑研申請的問題，海外暑期科研（暑研）是指學生利用暑假時間到科研機構開展課題研究的一種經曆。由於(yu) 本科生參與(yu) 科研的機會(hui) 和資源有限，如果學校提供不了，或者提供的機會(hui) 不適合，利用暑假去開展一段全日製的科研訓練，有助於(yu) 發掘科研興(xing) 趣以及提升科研能力。
海外暑研對申請有著無可比擬的重要性，尤其是研究型碩士及博士的申請。

一般來說簡曆第一項是一個(ge) 和美國教授做的科研項目會(hui) 很吸引申請委員會(hui) 的注意。所以在其他成績基本定型的情況下，科研可以將申請者的實力提升到另一個(ge) 層次。
暑研項目的申請時間每年的10月左右就需要開始準備材料，這些材料包含學校成績單、語言成績、個(ge) 人簡曆、推薦信以及個(ge) 人陳述等，11-12月初申請截止;在1-3月，海外院校會(hui) 進行初步篩選，篩選後會(hui) 通知學生進行麵試;麵試結束後，3月-4月後會(hui) 發布錄取結果。現在這個(ge) 時間點是項目審核中的階段，大多數項目已經過了申請時間，但我還是將知道的暑研項目做了整理，可以為(wei) 之後需要申請的同學和家長做參考。

Students must identify and contact a research mentor in advance of submitting an application. A mentor must agree to support your application, help you to develop and define a research project, and assist you in the writing of the research proposal.
The Research ProjectThe most important factor in selecting a project is your enthusiasm for the project itself and for working with the mentor. Although most students seek projects in their options, SURF provides an opportunity to explore other fields. SURF is not "just a summer job"; a project should have significant intellectual and creative content. The benchmark for a suitable project is the potential for publication in the refereed literature.
The ProposalThe proposal should be as technical and specific as you can make it as it will be read by people in the field. It must outline what you plan to do, and why it will be useful. The outline consists of theoretical background and experimental techniques, how the work fits into the flow of the research in the field, and a work plan for the project. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the mentor and by a member of the faculty in the project field. If you are a 2nd or 3rd time SURFer, your proposal should show a higher level of depth that would be expected of an experienced researcher. RecommendationsTwo recommendation letters are required, one of which must be from a faculty member. The other can be from an instructor, graduate TA, RA/RLC, coach or someone else who can speak to a student's strengths. Upperclass students should ask professors in their field for both recommendations. Recommender contact information should be entered in the applicant's SFP Online account. The recommender will then be emailed directly and asked to submit their recommendation into the online system. If you have done a previous research project with a different mentor, that mentor should write one of your recommendations. Recommendations are due on February 22, along with your application, so submit your recommender information well in advance.Your prospective Caltech mentor will complete a separate evaluation and should not write a letter of recommendation.
TranscriptVisiting (non-Caltech) students need to submit an unofficial transcript at time of application. If an award is offered, you will be asked to have an official transcript sent by your college or university.
