“English 5 is first and foremost a literature course.  The curriculum is designed to introduce students to several literary forms – myths, novels, and epic poetry– and the terms with which we talk about them. Frequently during the year, English 5 has intentional points of contact with History 5: as the students study a particular ancient civilization in history, they read a piece of literature in English associated with that civilization. When we explore those pieces of literature, we examine how societies view the heroic journey, leadership, and the individual’s commitment to their society.  During spring term, English 5 and History 5 are almost completely integrated as we study Medieval Europe and read Beowulf.”

Speyer Legacy School 位於(yu) 曼哈頓上西區和中城交界處，離 Collegiate 僅(jin) 五個(ge) 街區。這是唯一一所針對 Gifted and Talented 學生的頂尖私立學校。課程設置頗有獨到之處。五年級以上的英語和曆史課程在一起作為(wei) 一門課 - Humanities。

HUMANITIES

FIFTH GRADE: HUMAN ORIGINS, MIGRATION, AND EARLY SOCIETIES

Students explore human origins, early migration patterns, and the development of civilizations in the ancient world. They explore how early nomadic societies evolved into settled agricultural societies in Mesopotamia and Egypt. Students also explore the themes and elements of what makes a society a civilization. Fifth graders study geography, read mythology, analyze primary sources, and acquire a hands-on understanding of ancient cultures through projects and field trips. In the past few years, a culminating event has been the presentation of two Greek plays staged by the students.

Voluem I: Ancient Times 古代史

從(cong) 最早的遊牧民族到最後一位羅馬皇帝。這個(ge) 時代標誌著語言，宗教，建築，科學，哲學等領域的開始。

Volume II: The Middle Ages 中世紀史 (點這裏）

從(cong) 羅馬帝國衰亡到文藝複興(xing) 。講述了涵蓋公元400到1600年的重大曆史事件。

Volume III: Early Modern Times 近代史

從(cong) 伊麗(li) 莎白一世到淘金者。

Volume IV: The Modern Age 近現代史

從(cong) 維多利亞(ya) 時代到蘇聯解體(ti) 。

這套書(shu) 我們(men) 會(hui) 分成四期60節課 （每本書(shu) 15節課）的學習(xi) 來完成。本篇推文主要介紹第一卷：古代史 Ancient Times。

《The Story of the World 世界的故事》第一卷將講述古代史，從(cong) 最早的遊牧民族到最後一位羅馬皇帝。這個(ge) 時代標誌著語言，宗教，建築，科學，哲學等領域的開始。本課程的目的是向G34學生介紹Social Studies 和 ELA 的基礎知識。學生將被要求閱讀、寫(xie) 作並能夠解釋他們(men) 的答案並參與(yu) 課堂討論。

The Story of the World 

Volume I: Ancient Times

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of Social Studies and ELA. The class will focus on Ancient Civilizations and their mythology, geography, and of course, history!  Students will be required to do reading, writing and be able to explain their answers and participate in class discussions. 

Volume I – Ancient Times Ages will be covered in 15 one-hour classes.
